Obsidian is the 8th book in the New Species series by Laurann Dohner. 880 has been in a coma ever since he went ballistic after his mate was killed in front of him. He’s been free for months, safe at the Reservation, but he’s never woken up to find that out. Dr. Allison Baker thinks she knows what he needs to wake up but she’s turned down and decides to take matters into her own hands. 880, now called Obsidian, begins to wake up and instead of being held captive by humans now he’s craving one. Things are complicated after that naturally.
I have read all of the books in the New Species series up to this point and plan on reading the ones after as well but I don’t understand why I like them. Yes they have hot amazing sex scenes and the plots are interesting as well; but I never like the main characters. The men are amazingly possessive and the women let them dominate them. Most of the books the only reason I think the women go for the men is because they’re suffering from Stockholm Syndrome, and yet each book at the end I always think “Aw that was so sweet” or “Aw they are so in love.” I don’t know where the click happens and I go from thinking this guy is really creepy to wow I’d totally let him jump my bones but it happens every book.
Even though I can’t really explain why I like these books I do. They are well written, the world has been fleshed out over 8 books but I’ve never noticed anything contradictory, while I don’t like the main characters it’s not because they are poorly written, there are also several side characters that I really like. Most of the time I rank these books 4 out of 5 stars on Goodreads but I think I’m going to go with a 4.5 here for this one because it’s been a while since I’ve read one and I really liked it.
