Have You Ever Read an Amazing Book?

Have you ever read a book that was so amazing that you knew if you wrote hours a day for a thousand years you’d never be able to write something that good?

I got that feeling when I read the first two Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss. It seemed like every word was chosen purposefully and they were all perfect. I loved it!

I’ve read other books and felt the same way but also a bit depressed. Like why bother? I eventually get over it and realize that I may never write something that amazing but I’m still having a good time.

Have you ever read a book and thought that? What was it? How did you feel?

  1. I get this feeling all the time. My best strategy for getting over it and back into the writing saddle is to remind myself that while the book may *seem* perfect, it does have flaws. For example, Kingkiller Chronicles are fantastic, no doubt about it. But they do tend to drag on in places, and I’ve notice a lack of fully fleshed out female characters (not counting Denna and Fela). And if that doesn’t work, I remind myself that those writers probably read a book that blew them away, but they kept writing anyway. We may not be as awesome as our favourite writers at the moment, but there’s no saying we can’t become like them 🙂

  2. Yup. I’ve read several books like that. I just use them as examples of how I should be writing and as inspiration to try and write that well. And I love to read those books over and over again.
